Cali in one paragraph
Cali is Colombia's third-largest city, sitting at about 1,000 m in the Cauca valley near sea level heat, with a strong medical and dental training tradition anchored by Universidad del Valle, one of the country's oldest dental faculties. It is the capital of Colombian salsa and has a large, established private healthcare sector that serves the southwest of the country. Colombia's health system was ranked #1 in the Western Hemisphere and #22 globally in the WHO's 2000 World Health Report, and Cali's hospitals are part of that system, including at least one hospital that has held JCI accreditation at the hospital level. Check the JCI directory for current status.

Where the clinics are
Private dental clinics in Cali cluster in the south and west of the city: the Ciudad Jardín and Pance area, the Tequendama and San Fernando neighborhoods, and the Granada and El Peñón area on the west side, which is also where most international visitors stay. Most of the medical towers with multiple specialists are in the south near the main private hospitals. Plan to stay in the west or south; the north and east of the city are not where visitors should base themselves.
When Cali makes sense
- You are price-driven on a large case and willing to trade some English-language convenience for a lower quote.
- You have a family or personal connection to the city, or you are combining dental work with the southwest coffee region or the Pacific coast.
- You are already flying through Bogotá and the Cali hop is one hour.
When it does not
- First-time medical traveler who wants the most English-friendly, most vetted setup: Medellín is easier. See our Medellín lodging guide.
- You dislike heat during recovery; Cali is hot and humid at midday.
- You want us on the ground. We are physically in Medellín; for Cali we can verify registrations and get quotes, but we do not walk into the clinics the way we do at home. We say so plainly.
Verification, same as anywhere in Colombia
- Verify the dentist or maxillofacial surgeon on ReTHUS; for implant and surgical work, confirm a registered specialty (periodoncia, cirugía oral y maxilofacial, rehabilitación oral, prostodoncia).
- Confirm the clinic is registered in REPS for the services you are receiving. Full-arch surgery under sedation needs an anesthesiologist and a facility habilitated for it.
- Get the implant brand and the lab in writing. Brand determines whether a dentist at home can source parts for you later.
- Ask for an itemized quote: surgical phase, temporary prosthesis, final prosthesis, materials, sedation, imaging, and number of visits per trip.
Practical notes
- Airport: Alfonso Bonilla Aragón (CLO) is in Palmira, about 30 to 45 minutes from the west side of the city. Pre-arrange a driver or use an app; do not take an unmarked taxi.
- Safety: stick to the west and south, use app-based transport at night, and keep phones out of sight on the street, as in any large Colombian city.
- Mosquitoes: Cali's altitude and heat mean dengue is present. Use repellent, especially while recovering.
Frequently asked questions
Is Cali cheaper than Medellín for dental work?
Often by 10 to 20 percent on comparable work, but the gap shrinks at the top international-focused clinics. Compare itemized quotes rather than assuming.
Is Cali safe for a dental trip?
The west and south of the city, where the private clinics and hotels are, are the areas visitors use. Standard big-city precautions apply.
How do I fly to Cali?
Most North American routes connect through Bogotá or Panama City. Direct flights from the US have been limited and change seasonally.
Do Cali dentists speak English?
At clinics that market internationally, yes. At many excellent local clinics, less so. Bring a translation app or ask us for help.
